Falls Prevention & Balance on the Sunshine Coast & Gympie

Stay Steady, Safe & Independent

On Track Rehab provides mobile falls prevention on the Sunshine Coast, in Gympie, and across the surrounding regions — assessing your balance and safety in your own home and community, where most falls actually happen. Falls can affect people at any age, not just older adults — whether from a neurological condition, an injury, a vestibular (inner-ear) problem, or reduced strength and balance. A fall, or even the fear of falling, can quickly chip away at your confidence and independence. The good news is that most falls are preventable. Our experienced physiotherapists identify what’s putting you at risk and build a practical, personalised program to improve your balance, strength, and confidence so you can keep doing the things you love, safely.

Why falls prevention matters

Falls are a leading cause of injury across all age groups — and while the risk rises with age, balance problems and falls can affect anyone. People living with neurological or other health conditions, those recovering from injury or surgery, and people with dizziness or reduced strength can all be at increased risk, regardless of their age. Among older adults the numbers are striking — around one in three Australians aged 65 and over fall each year — but children, working-age adults, and younger people with disability or health conditions are far from immune. A fall can lead to fractures, a loss of confidence, reduced activity, and a loss of independence, and once you’ve had one fall the risk of another increases. The encouraging news is that falls are not inevitable at any age. Research consistently shows that targeted balance and strength programs significantly reduce the risk of falling, helping you stay active, mobile, and independent.

Falls prevention on the Sunshine Coast & Gympie — our approach

Falls usually have more than one cause, so an effective program looks at the whole picture. We begin with a thorough falls-risk and balance assessment, then build a tailored plan that targets your specific risk factors. Because we work with you at home, we can address the real surfaces, spaces, and daily tasks that challenge your balance — making your program practical, relevant, and effective.

What causes falls?

Understanding your personal risk factors is the first step to preventing falls. Common contributors include:

  • Reduced strength and balance — often from inactivity, ageing, illness, or time in hospital.
  • Unsteady walking or mobility problems, and difficulty with stairs or uneven ground.
  • Dizziness or vertigo, and inner-ear (vestibular) problems.
  • Vision changes, foot problems, or unsuitable footwear.
  • Certain medications, or taking several medications at once.
  • Home hazards such as loose rugs, poor lighting, clutter, or a lack of rails.
  • Long-term health conditions, including neurological and orthopaedic conditions.
  • Fear of falling, which can reduce activity and, in turn, increase the risk of falling.

What our falls prevention & balance program includes

Every program starts with a thorough assessment and clear, meaningful goals. Depending on your needs, your program may include:

  • Falls-risk and balance assessment — identifying the specific factors increasing your risk.
  • Balance retraining — exercises to improve steadiness and retrain your balance reactions.
  • Strength and mobility training — rebuilding the leg, hip, and core strength that keeps you upright.
  • Gait and walking practice — moving safely and confidently indoors, outdoors, and on stairs.
  • Home safety and hazard assessment — practical advice to make your home safer, plus equipment recommendations where helpful.
  • Confidence and overcoming the fear of falling — graded practice to rebuild trust in your own movement.
  • Education and footwear, vision, and medication guidance — and referral to the right professional when needed.
  • Post-fall recovery — rebuilding strength, mobility, and confidence after a fall.

Who can benefit?

Our falls prevention and balance programs suit anyone who feels unsteady or wants to reduce their risk of falling — at any age. This includes people living with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or brain injury; people recovering from injury, surgery, or a hospital stay; people with dizziness or vestibular (inner-ear) problems; people with lower-limb amputation or other conditions affecting balance; people returning to work or sport after injury; and older adults wanting to stay independent at home. If you’ve had a recent fall or a near miss, or simply feel less confident on your feet, we can help — whatever your age. Don’t see your situation listed? Contact us and we’ll let you know whether we’re the right provider for you.

A collaborative, joined-up approach

Because falls have many causes, we work as part of your wider care team. With your permission, we collaborate closely with the people supporting your health and safety, including GPs, pharmacists, optometrists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, exercise professionals, community and aged care providers, families, and carers. When further assessment or support would help, we can connect you with trusted partners and services — keeping everyone working toward the same goal of keeping you safe and independent.

What to expect — information for new participants

Feeling unsteady can be worrying, but you don’t have to manage it alone. From your first session we listen, assess carefully, and build a plan around the goals that matter to you. Here’s how we work:

  • In-home and mobile: we come to you — assessing your balance and safety in the real environments where you live. No travel, no waiting rooms.
  • One-on-one care: you work with the same experienced clinician, with a program tailored to your risk factors, abilities, and priorities.
  • Clear goals and education: we explain your risks, your options, and your plan in everyday language.
  • Encouragement, not pressure: we’ll progress you at a pace that respects your comfort, safety, and limits.
  • Group options where suitable: for people with similar goals, supportive group sessions can add motivation and connection.

Our aim is simple: to improve your balance, strength, confidence, safety, and quality of life — and keep you independent at home.
